Ceiling Selection and Acoustical Performance: Florida

Across the world of commercial construction, acoustical performance is being considered in the design process more than ever before. It is important to have an in-depth understanding of the key concepts of acoustics in order to choose the right products, saving both time and money for the builder, architect, and distributor.

“A knowledgeable sales rep with a good understanding of different ceiling systems can bring a lot of insight to a project, particularly at the bidding stage,” says Nathan Ramsay, District Manager for Florida. “At L&W Supply, we make sure that our people keep aware of the state of the ceilings market in order to price the appropriate products to meet the desired performance of each acoustical ceiling type.”

Since a ceiling system can incorporate several different kinds of products, it is crucial to learn the differences in acoustical performance between various ceiling types, along with the steps needed for proper installation. To help illustrate some of these key concepts, let’s take a look at three ceilings products commonly stocked by L&W Supply’s Florida delivery teams:

Danoline Gypsum Panels

Danoline Gypsum Panels

Danoline Perforated Gypsum Panels

Danoline is a perforated gypsum panel that be installed on ceilings or walls, offering a strong amount of versatility in application. A factory-applied acoustical backer provides high NRC values – from 0.55 to 0.70 depending on mounting type.

  • Quick to install and field modifiable
  • Three perforation patterns to choose from
  • NRC Rating of 0.55 with optional acoustical backer bringing the rating up to 0.70

Paraline Baffles

Paraline Baffles Linear Ceiling System

Paraline Baffles Linear Ceiling System

Paraline is suspended linear metal systems with a highly dynamic design. It is available in acoustical and non-acoustical options.

  • Clip on design allows ease of installation with no plenum depth requirements
  • Hangs straight and plum on curved or angled grid
  • Acoustical performance up to 3 Sabins.

In terms of acoustical performance, metal is known for providing both sound absorption and reflection, with standard acoustical ceilings only providing absorption. Metal panels commonly feature a fiberglass backing for enhanced acoustical performance, which is also a feature of Paraline.

Mars Acoustical Panels

Mars Acoustical Panels

Mars Acoustical Panels (80, 85, 90)

Mars is a fine-textured panel with strong sound absorption, allowing for high noise reduction across a variety of ceiling systems. L&W Supply’s teams have stocked this product in a number of different applications, including classrooms, offices, reception areas and patient rooms.

  • Non-directional design reduces installation time
  • Compatible with a number of different systems
  • Strong acoustical performance with an NRC rating from 0.80-0.90

L&W Supply’s teams work hard to ensure that our customers have access to the highest quality acoustical products in the industry. Accomplishing this goal requires a knowledgeable sales force and highly trained associates, along with strong partnerships with leading manufacturers like USG.
